simply is the operating system developed by SUN.
Originally it was only available for their machines (the Sparc
and UltraSparc architectures), but SUN decided some years ago
that a port to the x86 world would make sense for their business.
You can get a free Solaris license as a developer or as an educational
user. Plus you can get a 60day evaluation version for free.
